How to Try Private AI Offline on Your Mac

A useful first local AI task is small: turn a note into a checklist. You can see whether the model follows instructions without giving it personal or customer records.

This walkthrough uses Merka Vault™ on a supported Mac. You need the current app, enough memory and storage for an available model, and a connection for any initial download. The app checks availability on your device. Built-in providers also depend on operating system support and settings.

1. Open Merka AI

Download Merka for Mac, install it, and complete the app’s setup. Keep any recovery material you create safe. Open AI in the app to reach Merka AI.

The AI screen checks the device before offering a model. If it shows AI is unavailable on this device, follow the explanation and select Check availability. For example, a built-in provider may require Apple Intelligence to be enabled in System Settings. Available providers depend on your Mac and operating system.

2. Prepare an available model

If you see Download the on-device model, select Download model while connected. Wait for preparation to finish. The app shows download progress and offers Try again if a download fails.

When a model is ready, the composer becomes available. Check the model selector and the Runs on label. Use a model that runs on this Mac for the offline exercise below.

Start with text. Images and voice messages can require a separate model download and depend on the selected model’s capabilities.

3. Try a note you can inspect

Open New chat and enter this invented example:

Turn this note into a checklist. Use only the information in the note: On Saturday, bring the camera, charge both batteries, and copy the photos to my archive when I get home.

Send it and inspect the answer. Does it include the camera, both batteries, and the copy to your archive? Did it add tasks you did not request?

The exact wording will vary by model. This exercise asks the model to organize supplied text; it does not ask it to access your calendar, email, or photo library.

4. Check chat storage

Read the storage note below the chat list. Merka distinguishes chat saved on this device from chat that also syncs across your devices.

That distinction matters. The location where a model produces its answer and the places where conversation history is stored are separate parts of the privacy story. Local inference does not mean that a chat configured to sync can never leave the device.

5. Test a fresh response offline

Wait for model preparation and the current response to finish. When it is convenient to interrupt your Mac’s connection, disconnect Wi-Fi and any wired network connection. Keep Merka open.

Create a new chat and enter a different prompt:

Make a three-item packing list from this note: I need a notebook, a blue pen, and a raincoat.

The purpose is to generate a new response while disconnected, rather than reopen a response the app already saved. If the selected local model is ready and supported, text chat can run without internet access. Reconnect when you finish.

This is a functional offline check, not a network audit. It does not establish what may synchronize after reconnection. Model downloads, updates, chat synchronization, remote access, and off-site backup have their own connection requirements.

If something does not work

  • The model is unavailable: read the reason, check the operating system and provider settings, then select Check availability. Some devices do not support a local provider.
  • The download stops: reconnect, check available disk space, and use Try again.
  • The device cannot answer right now: close unneeded apps or let the Mac cool down, then check again.
  • An attachment needs a download: finish the required preparation while connected, or return to text for this exercise.
  • The answer is wrong: simplify the task and review the result. Running locally does not make a model reliable at every task.

Put the result in context

You have checked one task on one device with one model. Use that evidence to decide what to try next. Before introducing sensitive information, understand the model, chat storage, device access, and recovery behavior.
